29 Years Ago Today

|

John Lennon Peace Sign I was only 10 years old, but remember hearing the news.  John Lennon was shot and killed outside his apartment across the street from Central Park in New York.  I remember the sadness and grief of those around me, mostly people older than me.  I knew John's work, especially the music he created while with the Beatles.  I wasn't what you'd call a fan, though.  I was still hopelessly infatuated with KISS at the time, never realizing that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley fancied themselves John Lennon and Paul McCartney.  After his death, however, I took a new interest in his work.  There was so much of it that was really incredible stuff.  Nothing that might claim him a virtuoso or a genius (though I know many would argue that last point), but his work touched millions and inspired thousands to pick up an instrument and play.  He inspired those who in turn would inspire me, and for that alone I thank him.  I wish he could have stuck around a bit longer so I could have gotten to know him through the music that he was once again, after a hiatus, starting to create.

Rest in peace John.
