July 2008 Archives

Well, I'm back in Marshfield, WI for a week or so for my 20th Reunion.  It is really good to be home.  Of course, home has changed quite a bit.  There is now a major through-way going through the middle of town, and to build it, they had to change a major section of the roads near where I used to live.  So driving around my old neighborhood takes a bit of new navigation skill.

P7201628_smaller.JPG Yesterday, I went to Wildwood Park and Zoo.  It is a beautiful park on the south end of town, featuring nature trails, a small zoo, and a driving path through the woods.  Some of animals that I grew up seeing  at the zoo are no longer there.  There are, of course a bunch of new animals too.
Gone are the monkeys, replaced by a cougar.  The grizzly bear is still there, and like most my childhood, was hiding inside.  There is a new raptor section featuring eagles, owls, and a beautiful Peregrine Falcon.

Walking through the woods (pictured left), I saw a site that was new to me.  There were deer in the woods.  While deer in Wisconsin is anything but uncommon, I had never seen them in Wildwood before.  I'm not going to go so far as to say they were tame, I was within 20 yards of the mother deer, and she didn't even get up from where she was laying.  She kept her eye on me though.  There were a couple fawns off on the other side of the trail.  They certainly seemed a bit more skittish than the mother.  They were probably 60-70 yards from me but definitely more nervous about me being there.
